Interesting facts about Dynamo Dresden

Dear blog readers,

I am in 9 days to begin Dynamo Dresden story in Football Manager 2014. It will be my first experience in Germany and so awaited by you attempt to manage non-English club. Personally for me, starting with any club in FM is not just simple gaming, it’s a true grave thing. That’s why first and foremost I like to dedicate myself to learning club history and am going to try to underline the most interesting events…

Policemen and first title

Dynamo Dresden was found in 1953, the year when USSR dictator Stalin died. It’s only circumstance most likely but it could influence somehow whole East Germany. The club was tightly affiliated with East German police. So you can consider first Dynamo Dresden footballers were policemen. What’s interesting they managed to win their first title in DDR-Oberliga that year!

8 titles in DDR-Oberliga

Of course it was only East German league and there were no mighty Bayern Munich, Hamburg and other West German teams. Normally Dynamo Dresden had been competing with FC Berliner and FC Magdeburg for the first places. They succeeded become the second most successful club in East Germany with 8 titles won in the following years:

  • 1953, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1989, 1990

In addition, Dynamo Dresden filled their trophy run with 7 national cups:

  • 1952, 1971, 1977, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1990

Semi-final of UEFA Cup 1988/89

The biggest achievement in Europe for Dynamo Dresden happened right before fall of Berlin wall. They made their way into semi-finals of UEFA Cup beating Aberdeen, Waregem,  Roma, Victoria Bucuresti. Only West German Stuttgart managed to cope with Dynamo Dresden breaking their dreams of Final.

Bundesliga experience

Dynamo Dresden had been playing in Bundesliga from 1991 until 1995. They struggled on the pitch as well as financially battling against relegation every year. But after all, poor performance and financial debts dropped the club into the third tier Regionalliga. Since that times Dynamo Dresden has never come back to Bundesliga and had numerous ups and down between lower tiers of German football.

So now it’s up to me to return Dynamo Dresden into Bundesliga and then, who knows, maybe even bring some glory in Europe for this club. I can’t explain you how I am inspired!
