Fly in the ointment

Hi all,

I am glad to tell you about the start of season 6, the first one when my Forest should compete for PL title. We made a very good start making three wins in all three league games. It’s also great to see and feel easiness during Champions League qualification round with PSV.

Though there’s a fly in the ointment. Paris Saint-Germain beat Forest without any chances for me. I was feeling truly helpless against the French grand club…

To tell you the truth, I think Nottingham Forest has good chances to defeat PSG despite stronger squad they have. Last season numerous victories over English grand clubs settled some kind of confidence into me. But it was a completely faulty feeling. I don’t remember when Forest was so helpless last time… Even my tactical manipulations didn’t work.

PSG’s average player value is $23M, average salary – $130K.

PSG are absolutely dominating by squad strength in the French League. Javier Pastore, brothers Benders, Sakho, goal machine Facundo Ferreyra, superb regen Everton Vanderlei

We could concede more than three goals but iron-willed Samir Handanovic made another beautiful penalty save in his career.

Look at one of the best talents PSG has in the squad:

Premier League

In reality, the match against PSG is the only disappointment. Premier League start was never so perfect. Yes, Sunderland, Q.P.R., and Swansea are not the strongest opponents to make serious conclusions. However, it’s really important to escape loosing points against weaker teams if I want to see Nottm Forest at the top in the end of the season.

Match stats

The most emotional and exciting game of all I had at the beginning.

Swansea was never an easy opponent for Nottingham Forest. They have decent defence and Jozy Altidore in attack who often make impressive runs and scores goals. As you see this time they were leading 2:0 at home on the 63th minute after another Jozy’s goal.

What I did in the half-time after poor performance during the first 45 minutes - I switched tactics to the 4-2-3-1 control, the most attacking variant I have in Triple C approach. It’s understandable decision because Nottingham Forest had nothing to loose at that moment. Then shouts “Hassle the opponents” and “Push Higher Up” were applied after the second conceded goal. And it gave the result. Forest players started to play very aggressive and attacking football, they simply stunned Swansea with 3 goals, one bar by Ademilson, and two disallowed goals…

The replacements made during the second half were another key to success. Thomas Drage and Gylfi Sigurdsson lead the team to this marvellous comeback.

Don’t forget to watch the goals. The last one is scored by Gylfi Sigurdsson with a marvellous long shot which is really worth watching. Goals from long shots are so rare in Football Manager 2013…

Champions League debut

I expected more resistance from PSV at the City Ground. But their weak defence could do nothing against my fast and effective attackers. Moreover, Strootman was sent off what allowed to easily score 4 goals in total. It transformed the reply match into a formality. Therefore, I used the second squad players in Holland and lost the game.

It’s also interesting to see Russian Anji beating Milan confidently.

Then we got into quite tough group because Bayern Munich and Lyon are frequent Champions League residents. Luckily, Lyon is not so terrifying as PSG if one looks over its squad.

Here’re also some traditional odds from Sky Bet. It’s nice to see Nottm Forest is already considered an authority after grabbing last season’s Europa League trophy.

Nottingham Forest players

Can’t say something definite about Forest newbies. Uncertain performances by Fierro and Coentrao in the first matches for the new team. Though another Steven Caulker was even better than other Forest centre backs proving out his ability to win many headers and scoring his first goal with one of them.

The man of the starting season period is obviously Rick Stevens. I can now say the wonderkid has finally adapted at the right wing. 2 goals and 3 assists in 4 matches. What should I add? Oh, yes. Stevens is extremely explosive. The fastest Nottingham Forest player!

Matches to play soon

Allianz-Arena adventure is very soon. Bayern Munich headed by Rafa Benitez seems a real test for my young team. They still have the squad’s skeleton they use in the real life diluted by several star player like Isco, Lucas Leiva, Javier Hernandez, Andriy Yarmolenko

As you remember, Nottm Forest won two League Cups in row. This time we’re starting in the cup against Man City. I should confess it’s too often when my club gets so difficult opponents in either League Cup or FA Cup. Nevertheless, this time I am going to use backup players in the both cups and concentrate on Premier League and Champions League.

In the end I would like to share top transfers of summer 2017:

Friends, I won’t be able to answer your comments and write to the blog during next five days. Going to have some rest in a short trip with my wife and friends.
