Season #4. Expectations and transfers

Welcome to the 4th Leeds United season that is the 2nd in Premier League! Leeds story continues…

Expectations and title odds

The board was making me a proposition of mid-table finish with $42M for transfers but I selected more difficult target of finishing in the top half:

Current media prediction is:  image which is certainly not enough.

Title odds from Sky Bet are poor. Only 2000-1 and talks about mid-table finish.

But I think I can even hope to get into UEFA League zone... Why? Read about my latest transfers below.

Dawid Janczyk  stays in Leeds

Dawid Janczyk was the best Leeds player in the season #2. Then he disappointed me much in the Premier League season #3 and I decided to sell him because of quite high price - $10.75M. But Euro-2012 changed my plans – Dawid scored 5 goals for Poland and got Golden Boot award afterwards:

I decided it’s better to give him another chance to adapt and show himself in Premier League.

By the way, Euro 2012 final: EnglandCzech Republic 2:0

Players out

OK, Janczyk stayed. But I offloaded almost 10 players which performance wasn’t enough for my Premier League ambitions:

Leeds sold players before season #4, FM 2010

(all prices in US dollars)

Among them David Beckham whose Pace attribute became 4 Happy In spite of this his salary didn’t decrease - $30K Happy So the deal with Reading was an economic solution though Beckham is too slow anyway.

Leeds newcomers of the previous season – Vicente and Danny Shittu – didn’t impress me. Therefore I decided to sell them both. Moreover, their age was above 31.

Patrick Kisnorbo and Bradley Johnson were native players of Leeds United, and I had some kind of sympathy to them. But time to say bye has come – my club should leverage quality of players in every area.

Players in

And the most interesting part of this post – bought players:

New Leeds players, season #4, FM 2010

(all prices in US dollars)

1. Diego Buonanotte

Diego Buonanotte, Football Manager 2010

First of all I want to boast by getting again Diego Buonanotte. This time Chelsea put him on transfer list and I proposed high wage and “signing money” beating competitors on transfer market. Interesting that during contract talks Buonanotte didn’t want to go to Leeds at all, but I gave him three times more ‘Signing On Fee’ money than he expected and increased Goal Bonus. I am really happy with this transfer.

Most readers of my blog should remember my Hull story. Diego Buonanotte was one of Hull leaders in Football Manager 2009

2. Jadson

Jadson, Football Manager 2010

Jadson, one of Shakhtar leading Brazilian attackers, was signed on free by Bosman rule. It was too tempting! Now Marco Verratti has strong competitor in his playmaker position. I’m not sure how I will use them both. There can be cases:

- use them both in rotation

- move Verratti to Ball Winning MC position and use Jadson as Playmaker MC

- try to train Verratti for AMR position and have more options in squad rotation

Anyway Verratti will be the first squad player, of course.

3. Brede Hangeland

Brede Hangeland, Football Manager 2010

My biggest problem of the last season was defence. Only David Prieto had been corresponding to high Premier League’s level. Other defenders made too many mistakes. $16M transfer of Brede Hangeland has to help in solution of this problem. I respect this Norwegian defender much and hope that in spite of age he’ll show great performance in Premier League.

4. Adam Nemec

Adam Nemec is signed on free. Typical target man with great Work Rate, Strength, Teamwork, Balance and Jumping. Since this moment I have 6 forwards Happy Nemec will be backup player.

5. Daniel Van Buyten

Daniel Van Buyten is very experienced defender. He will be used in rotation together with Beevers and Bramble.

6. Marco Padalino

I have AMR position in my tactics. And sometimes opponents provokes me to set quick explosive right winger on it. But Giuliano isn’t so quick and therefore I bought Marco Padalino from transfer list. Though I was dreaming of Bystrov from Zenit but they asked for $23M. Too much for me right now.

7. Gaby Mudingayi

Belgian bulldog became Leeds footballer for free. Mudingayi is a typical DMC whose mission is ball tackling and giving it to more creative teammate. Hope he will adapt in the team quickly.

So if we look again to all transferred players we’ll see that only 3 of them were bought exclusively for the main squad: Buonanotte, Jadson and Hangeland. Other mentioned players will be used in rotation or just from substitution bench. Newcomers that were not described by me are talented youngsters (regens) whom I have already sent to Reserve and U18 teams.
