My first season in FM 2010 is over

I am glad to tell that the first Leeds season has come to an end.

Final League 1 Table

We won the league quite easily. My team had no problems in gaining 98 points:

Leeds United won League 1

Interesting fact is that Southampton managed to get to the Championship in spite of 10 points deduction.

Here are the last matches:

Last matches of Leeds in League 1

It was pretty boring in the end of the season. Therefore I decided to accelerate events and went on holiday for 6 last games. I’ve just indicated assistant manager to use current tactics and selection and he made 4 victories and 2 draws.  Then (don’t know why) he didn’t want to sign a contract and was released on a free transfer. Maybe I overloaded him? Big Grin

Additionally, I lost JPT final to Southampton. I didn’t recognize The Saints – they were so determined and quick on Wembley! As a result it was an equal game and second half mistakes of my defence decided a destiny of the trophy. Nevertheless, I wasn’t too disappointed. Anyway it’s not even a League Cup tournament.

Southampton won JPT final

Leeds United players

Now some words about Leeds players:

Beckford is at the head of the list, FM 2010

Jermaine Beckford was absolutely the best in this season. Club fans agreed with me giving him Fans Player of the Year award. It’s hard to argue against this fact because Beckford manage to score 46 goals!

Though he appeared only at the 2nd position among other League 1 scorers because of even more effective Saganowski:

Saganowski, Beckford and Rhodes are top scorers in FM 2010

Apart from Beckford 3 other Leeds United players got to the Team of the Year – Bromby, Campbell and Sandrinho:

Team of the Year with Bromby, Campbell, Sandrinho and Beckford

Finally, analyzing performance and attributes of each Leeds player I decided that team squad needs perceptible changes. For instance, I am going to sell the following footballers:

- Shane Higgs (GK)

- Leigh Bromby (DC)

- Lubomir Michalik (DC)

- Gareth Williams (MC)

- Luciano Becchio (FC)

We’ll see if I gain success on a transfer market before the 2nd season. The Championship awaits for Leeds!

    Help??

  3. Mick Says:

Won't you upload the tactic you're using please?

  4. Stefan Says:

Shortlist is in the search tab on your home screen.

Will you be posting about the World Cup? Cameroon won it in my game which shocked me.

Well done taking leeds out of League 1. Can't wait to see how you fair in the Championship.

  5. Mike Ritson Says:

lampard>gerrard, if you right click the bar across the top of the main screen where the current icons are you can select the icons you would like up there and set it out to look like what fm09 looked like.

Congrats on your promotion... still can't believe your going to sell Bromby, will be a huge mistake if you don't get a good enough player and Sol Campbell will struggle in the Championship...

  6. joeb93 Says:

good post. how do you find such good players. when will your next post be mate ?

  7. MAL Says:

Hey Vitally, having been inspired by your decision to choose leeds, I thought I would give it a go as well.

Usually in Footy manager games I am one of those players who finds it hard to keep on going after the second season, as transfers become difficult, next-gens intrude, and budgets become unreasonable. Especially since I always chose a 'Rich' team...

But having read your blogs for a year, I realised that there must be some fun in a challenge :P Hull especially inspired me. Admittedly I chickened out of the prospect of working from Blue Square up, but leeds seemed a good 'toe-dip' in the water!

Well anyway, I am now in my third season, having won both league one, and the championship in the first go. L1 was easy, but I won the championship on the last day on goal difference, and could have finished 1st to 5th on the last day!

However my rambling story is all to get to one question: How important is squad cohesion, morale, and continuity in the game?

Having only been past the third season once (with Lazio in FM08), I have little experience with this, and no experience with preparing a team for a relegation dog fight!

The main thrust of my question is, my Assistant in my leeds story decided most of my first team players, 3-3.5 stars in the championship, were not good enough for the premiership! In fact only three youngsters were 3.5 and above- Shelvery, Lung Jr, and Marco Verratti (who everyone should buy, got him for 400k, is now a 5 star player for me! Excellent progression rate, hes better than Michael Johnson!)

The rest were all 2.5 star. I decided to retain the 3 stars as back up, and get rid of the 2.5 stars, some of which (Kisnorbo, Bromby, Kabous, Motaeb) had served me admirably all the way from league one to the premiership. This led to the whole squad complaining of the lack of cohesion and a subsequent dive in morale!

So essentially, in a relegation dogfight where your likely to go down, should you retain most of your previous squad, if you rate them, and ignore the stars, and buy expensive but proven players to strengthen key areas, or is a whole-sale clear out advisable?

I have gone for the clear out approach, and things really arent going as well as I hoped... where are all the good £2m- £4m strikers!

Cheers, really looking forward to your reply! Please reply! :):):)

hey Vitally your doing well... I am also managing leads at the moment. I bought Amr Zaki in my first season for 1.2mil pound.. he has proven to be a proliffic goal scorer for my team (this season 35gls from 36appearences). Also he is now worth 4mil pound which is nice.

I am really interested to know what tactics you are using. Any chance of letting us know?

  20. Jack Says:

hi vitaly...i want to ask you one question...how do i want to be national team manager? i already accept it but nothing happen

  21. MAL Says:

    @ Anonymous

What you should do is register your crappy youth players! Or good ones! You have a smaller squad, but then again you dont have to buy crapy british players that cost like 4000000000000000x the amount of a good cheap foreign import!

So thats why the premierleague is full of them! Cos they are cheaper, and better, than their English counterparts at that level!

Having said that Man City will sell you Joe Hart, Michael Johnson for like combined £8m, and Tottingham will sell you O'Hara and Naughton for combined £6m. So theres four English players right there! Other gooduns are Jonjo Shelvey (1.4m from cashstrpped charlton, turns into Gerrard), Joe Mattock (next ashley cole), Alex Pearce (Good enough for bottom end of prem and always improves) and Chris Wood (West brom, strong striker).

There you are, 8 British players, that become or are awesome, for a combined £15m! See wht I mean :P

VITALLY is squad cohesion more important than the star ratings! If you rate the players, and the squad is doing awesome, but your assistant says they suck, is it worth changing??

Please read my previous posts to get details, I really wanna know what you think, and will post on here til I get an answer :P

  22. Steve Says:

Well done Vitaliy, knew would go up and u will do well in the championship. Mal, sometimes what ur assistant manager says is rubbish. I have always done quite well no matter what the assistant says. Squad Cohesion is very important though, because otherwise the players will lose confidence. Hope that helps

  23. Alex Says:

Nice one Vitaly, in my game I also managed to get Southampton promotion dispite the 10 point deduction, Saga and Lambert up front are too good up front, in my second season in the Championship Lambert has banged in 29 goals, so loving life!

  24. Stoney Says:

Congrats, but do you think you could do a peice about how to sell you player effectively, to gain the most cash for them, but I really struggle at selling for the right price, or selling at all.

It would be a great help.

  25. Thomas Says:

Just wondering if all the bugs was bothering you during the season? Not going to wait for the patch for the new season?

  26. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

    Mick,
I am not ready to share my tactics. I've just started the 2nd season in the Championship and Leeds results are not so good...

  27. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

    Stefan,
    already done :)

  28. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

    MAL,
    interesting story from you.

Answering on your question I can say that it is better to buy 2-3 very skilled players. For instance, Artem Milevskiy. Most probably that will be enough to survive in the first Premier League season.

That point is in that I think squad cohesion is really important. If you change your squad much your team will not receive enough points in the first half of season. That will influence morale and then you can relegate from PL.

  29. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

    eXtinct,
I lost free transfer battle for Marc Crosas...

  30. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

    MAL,
sorry, I don't answer comments every day just because I am too busy with own business and family. So you should just wait several days till my answers

  31. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

    Thomas,
I installed 10.1.1 patch (that repairs FM crashes) and feel more or less OK regarding bugs

  32. MAL Says:

Thanks Vitally! I understand what you mean, especially since I had real problems selling players (Motaeb, scored over 50 goals in two seasons at both champ and L1 level, 2m, no takers????)

Yeah I was abit insistent, lol guess I have too much time being a students 8)

But thanks guys for the advice, tbh the clearout went ahead anyway (alot of loan to buys, barely any transfers)... Have done alright in first three games, beat Tottingham, lost to everton and drew with bolton away.

Strikers I got- Marc Antoine Fortune- 1.2m from Celtic
    Iaquinta- Loan
    Marcelinho- Loan to buy
    Stancu- 4.9m

Iaquinta is still awesome, but at 31 is slowing down, Marcelinho is a decent Brazilian next gen, and Fortune is awesome, strong in the air, and Stancu is an all round powerhouse (fast strong, both feet, head, 17 finishing!)

Took me til 31st August to get them though :(

And Verratti, Lung jr and Shelvey are still potentially the best players in my squad, though I added Kapopdouplous and Helan.

    YOUTH IS AWESOME!

Cheers guys! Cant believe Inter finished 10th.... can you post a more detailed account Vitally? Smells like coach replacement...

  33. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

Hm, Mourinho is still Inter manager!

  36. LopezFC Says:

I am in my first season with Leeds and we are flying. Introduced Ray Clemence, Bill Beswick and Brian Eastick to the coaching staff and a also a couple of scouts. I sold a host of players most noteably Michalik, Robinson, Parker for big money to Notts County. Also out were Hughes, Ankergren, Kandol, Showumni, Webb and Marques. I signed Sol Campbell, Lauren and goal keeper Sebastian Viera on free transfers. Paid 775k for 20yo argentinian striker Cristaldo. Also bought Swedish left back Emil Johansson and loaned in Adam Matthews, John Fleck and Vladimir Weiss. Undefeated in 16 games. Beckford and Cristaldo dominating each scoring at over a goal a game. Vice Captain Howson also one of the teams best dominating play scoring plenty of goals goals. This look up for the future also with Tom Elliott proving a exciting prospect whenever he gets the chance. Planning to Championship football now...

  37. Snær Says:

Good job with Leeds, I'm currently managing Charlton and I'm ripping the league appart even though i only spent 5k on Neil Mellor who is the best targetmen you can get for L1 also got in Camara and a lot of loanees like Jordan Henderson and Ben Mee who've been brilliant so far Henderson is amazing!

Though my question is what are the best bargains and free transfers on your second season?

  38. Anonymous Says:

wow ur awesome... Can you recommend any good tacics and signings for arsenal in FM2010??

I can't find any good tactics that suit the arsenal team. need help....

  39. TWatling Says:

After i saw this i tried it out with leeds :)
Ended to be a very good first season for me, i got the 'Goals Galore' tactic and mucked around with it to make it more suitable for leeds.
I went the whole season unbeaten, and only drawing 8 games within that.
I won the jpt. Beat hull away 2-0, drew with arsenal away 2-2 but they beat me back at ellen road.
And the only player i actually signed was Sergey Krivets.
