FM 2010. My first impressions
Hello my dear readers!
I am completely in exploration of FM 2010 demo now. I started some kind of trial game with Genoa. It’s just for playing the demo, trying new features and expressing my feelings about it. And when the poll about my future FM 2010 team is over and I have patched full version of the Game I will start a new story managing another team.
Now some words about FM 2010 features that impressed me.
Backroom Advice
Backroom advice give so much information... I think it can be very useful feature. Sure it is necessary to explore it more deeply to understand the whole power of the feature.
Customizable Views
I have been dreaming of customizing columns in squad selection and transfer search since Football Manager 2005 probably! And now my dream has come true! My first action about this feature:
I opened squad selection, added two columns - Nationality and Value.
From the other hand the feature is pretty buggy now. Actually column resizing works quite bad. You can hide other columns trying to resize another one.
Tactics Creator
Tactics Creator is probably the most important change between FM 2009 and FM 2010. I impressed by the screen above – highlighting of the most important attributes for selected Role looks awesome. And the description of role is also very good. Click on Advanced button returns us to the former system of individual instructions with sliders and comboboxes.
By the way in my humble opinion setting up and tuning tactics using new wizard looks fluent as well as tuning through Tactics screen.
Press Conference about new player
Press Conferences regarding new signings are nice. They are not so important as abovementioned features but they make The Game more realistic.
New User Interface
New UI looks good. System of tabs and buttons instead of tree view on a sidebar allows to access any section in more easy way. Additionally sidebar was removed – so we have more space that can be used by added columns to your views (customizable views).
I like also relocation of many buttons - for instance, Continue, Assistant Advice, Media Comments.
It’s also cool that Player Report looks better and more understandable than in FM 2009.
FM 2010 Skins
I have negative impressions about standard FM 2010 skins.
Light one is too light. Impossible for me to use because white background strikes my eyes.
Dark skin is not really good because of some white words on light background. For instance, Overview screen and Pending transfers screen part at the right bottom corner. And Background of player profile could be darker as well.
So in my mind Football Manager 2009 has much better standard skin!
That’s all at the moment, dear readers. Play Football Manager 2010! ![]()

Hey Thanks Vitaliy but you haven't mentioned anything about the processing speed. Is it better than FM 09? Is the 3D view better?
Can't wait for FM 2010!
Does anyone know if its possible on continue your Demo game in the full version?
dr_reddevil,
I played few matches only and cannot say match about 3D engine. At first look it seems better.
Regarding processing speed I woudn't even compare just because I play FM 2010 demo on small database from one of quickstarts. It would be realistic to make comparison speed after FM 2010 release playing on large DB.
Tom,
yes, it's claimed by SI Games that you can continue.
the 3d engine is awesome
that make this game even more addictive and omg this is my 5th sleepless night!
best of luck dude i have always followed the ups and downs of your southampton and hull stories and many others, could you be the one who picks my team from this list please, my list is
Wolves
Birmingham
Burnley
Barnsley
Watford
Luton Town
Bristol City
Bristol Rovers
Bari
Please get back to me A.S.A.P
I personally like the fact that you can ask your assisstant what to do regarding the opposition players. Saves time manually putting it all in. not too sure about the layout. suppose it'll take time to get used to. looking forward to the new blog! I think i'm going to try and emulate your success with hull on the new game. Good luck with however you choose. They'll see success with you at the helm.
when is the full version released?
Den, full version is released on 30th October. Can't wait!
i am chelsea and i have a transfer ban!!!!!!!!!!! still top of league 11 games played 10 wins 1 draw :D
Hey Vitally, I have to say I am surprised about what you said about the reports. My impression was overwhelmingly negative, little information, and no real explanation that I was hoping for of the star system! Also I have to say, that as far as I can tell with the transfers, silly season has been directed onto this game. £35m for Hernanes??? £12m for Martin Petrov??? And finally, how do you even make the assisstant reports about 'fitness' advantage work for you? I mean what can you do in the game? Put 'Close down more'? And what is with the new tactics screen for standard tactics?? What happened to the sliders!!
Sorry but my impressions so far are that in some areas improvement (customisability etc) and in others recession (especially the transfers!).
I am a massive fan of the series, so will still buy it and hope I can grow to love it ( I am sure I will :) ) but my overwhelming view is negative...
I would like to hear some more indepth thought from you on the nature of transfers in the game though :)

Vitaliy, how come I can't download ur Hull game? It says the download service is full!?
Is the FM2010 demo free to download?
my demo allowed me to make 4subsitions. I had a player sent off so I cancelled a sub i was going to make, and brought on a different player but it did both!
Can definitely say the 3D is a big improvement. What is shown appears to better match what the game engine says is happening.
The ability to make changes quickly from is great. Been playing as QPR and in a League Cup match against Blackpool, we were dismal in the first half, going down 2 goals. Set to attacking after the first goal and it seemed like my players had forgotten how to play football.
At half time told them I expected nothing short of a win. For the first 10 minutes, not much changed. I then set to Overloaded, and a few of the other tactics like, Pump Into Box. Was like a totally diffent team. Somehow we scored the winner in the 88th minute.
It seems like i have found a minor bug for the FM 2010 demo. During the squad view, when i try to sort the team for instance by value, it does not sort correctly. I have to press several times to find that it is sort in the right order. I don't know if you guys got encounter this same problem. And FYI, i downloaded the strawberry version.
Hey Vitaly, looking forward to following your blog again this year. I would generally agree with your assessment of the FM2010 demo - especially the bit about the skins! I'm using the dark one but it leaves a bit to be desired.
Just a note relating to what someone was saying about the transfers earlier - I bought Martin Petrov for about 3mil =) (He was transfer listed).
Not noticed a problem with sorting, but probably only a matter of time.
Have noticed in the team selection though, if you change the view to Attributes/All, it does nothing the first time you select it.
Also sometimes the list disappears, though comes back if you change the view.
Funniest thing I've seen so far though, was an opposition player who got injured, and had to leave the pitch. He left the pitch still laying on his back, looking as though he'd been dragged off by his feet.
Seems like they've resolved most of the crazy offside decisions. Conceded a goal that was marginally offside, which is realistic and the only bad call in such situations I've spotted. So far not none of the ones that make you wonder where the linesman is keeping his guidedog. However, have noticed sometimes at free kicks and corners and the ball gets pumped back into the area, it is extremely sharp at giving offside. I believe some of these calls are bad, but at least it happens to both sides.
i think the fm10 demo is very hard to win games compared to 09, with burnley i constantly control games against teams like bolton, hull, stoke but somehow they always score late goals and i lose and draw a lot
I really dont like the new fm2010, im really gutted! Maybe its just me but these are what i am finding annoying...
When on the tactics screen, selecting my team, i get to the attacking midfielders and strikers by scrolling down, once selected it goes back to the top, so i keep having to scroll down to select my next striker. (I have a large squad, maybe i should sell a few players).
Another major annoyance is match day. I am one of those saddos that dont really use the 3d match engine and use commentry only, but even though its selected as commentry only, my games always start on full screen tv view. By the time i have exited and got to the player ratings i love to have up, half an hour of the game has gone... which is another major problem... it takes so much more effort to get to player ratings, you have to press stats then it comes up with match stats, n then i need to press player ratings. I do enjoy looking at the live league which is also alot more hassle by going to info n then league table. I like to switch between many screens on match day and with the menu and +menu's on fm09 it was so easy.
I know it seems im picking at little things, but these little things made me enjoy the game, and for the first time since cm2 i dont think im going to buy it and stick to fm09. I dont know, maybe there is something i can do about these problems, im goin to see if i can customise any of it!
Guys,
I thinks those bugs you found will be fixed in FM 2010 patches.
Try and remember situation that was after release of FM 2009 previous year. There was a huge bunch of bugs if you compare with this year's release!
Actually this is a reversal! I have played it for a couple of days as sunderland, and after my intial omg at the transfers, you can find quite afew tasty bargins (kevin thompson anyone?), I really like the player roles, and am getting used to the tactics generally. The staff seem to do loads more (though I still dont get what your supposed to change when you have a 'dribbling advantage') and the press conferences are solid!
Anyway cant wait for the new game now! If its better than the demo (I have encountered few bugs weirdly) then its gonna be awesome!
DONT LET THEM MAKE YOU CHOOSE LEEDS, USE NEWCASTLE AND TAKE US BACK TO OUR GLORY DAYS! VITALLY THE MESSIAH!

Overall I'm very impressed, especially given the state of FM09 on release.
Have to agree that it's not clear what you're meant to do with some of the advice given in the prematch meeting. I'm greatly amused that my Assistant manager John Gorman always disagrees with my coach, Keith Ryan.
The tactics generator makes things so much easier to work. Took me ages in previous versions to work out decent tactic, and months of tweaking to refine it to be a good tactic. Straight away I have decent tactic as a base to work from. Never going to stop the odd one off game where your team decides they've forgotten how to play football, but as a QPR fan I'm used to seeing that all too often. I'd got us to 2nd in the Championship and then we lost a match that we were strong favourites for. The realism is scary.
Anyhow, I've pre-ordered the game now on the strength of the demo. :)
is it free 2 downlowd Vitaliy?
One problem with the demo is that it takes 3 hours to download of steam.
genoa is a good choice. i know you prefer playing with englih teams but it would be nice to see you in other european leagues like la liga or bundesliga...
lennon,
I will start managing one of English teams as soon as I receive FM 2010 DVD. Genoa is just like first FM training for me.
Anonymous,
Football Manager 2010 demo is free to download. Use this link to do that.

The game is full of bugs. Want proof?
Patch 10.1 released at 29/10 (before official game launch).
Bug list is huge.
The new skin sucks, you need more clicks than you need in FM 2009.
Changes in features are good but the whole interface in my opinion sucks.
The game is half baked, this is what i think. SI has lost its magic touch i believe.
Full of bugs, and again another attempt in mugging people off in broad day light. How many game-tester SI employed this time around? I mean there's millions of people eager to help and SI just don't give a rat's ass about us,as long is raining money. Same mafia tactic employed by KONAMI with PES 2010.
hi im preston north end and and still in pre season. But i signed marlon harewood for 775,000 on 10k a week. I aslo regret not getting ebi smolerik (bolton last season) he is a free transfer but my wage budget doesn't stretch that far. He wanted 8,500k CAN SOMEONE RECOMMEND A CHEAP CB FOR ME PLEASE BECAUSE I HAVE NO SEAN ST LEDGER. My remaining budget is around 750,000 with about 7k wage left.
