Starting New Season: the First Achievements
Dear readers. I want to tell you about the coolest Premier League start in Southampton history under my management. The top-half expectations in the previous post are beginning to come true. Take a look at the results of my Southampton:
Sure, it's only the beginning of the championship and any team can fall down to relegation zone. But I'm in really optimistic mood and going to fight for UEFA Cup place even
.
Among the aforementioned results it's necessary to single out my first victory over Arsenal. It was even game on Emirates Stadium, and it's result was provided by the goal of our prominent forward - Marius Niculae. The same could happen in the match with other English grand club - Chelsea:
But Southampton defence didn't mark their substitution(!) striker Miroslav Klose twice and we got loss instead of a win. For now football club of Roman Abramovich is going the 7th. Meantime, my club is on the 8th position, next after Chelsea.
What I can say - I'm very glad about that. Feeling that my current players and style of playing have ever more prospective in a sense of results! We are still missing a lot of goal chances. I think buying of some star forward can help to increase amount of realized dangerous moment.
At the current moment player statistics is very well. That corresponds to level of performance shown by the players of my team.
Want to praise all my last important buyings: Massimo Donati, Federico Piovaccari, Demy De Zeeuw, Mamadou Sakho. The board is also happy about all of them
. Sakho does cover the left flank completely, De Zeeuw rules in the centre of the pitch playing very quick and smart passes, Donati and Piovaccari come more from substitution bench leveraging the attacking force of the team. So the guys are really good.
The best footballer of the season start for us is Georginio Wijnaldum. Beautiful dribbling, nice speed, cool passing. He is the most wanted Southampton player. He made 5 assists in 11 matches and got to the top of the best Premier League assistants rating.
The tactical scheme of Southampton didn't get accustomed a lot. I did only some small changes:
- moved two wingers to AML/R positions from ML/R;
- turned on Free Role setting for these both wingers;
- set forward arrows for two MCs;
- turned off Hold Up Ball for FC.
Current formation:
I decided to play without using of old 4-3-3 attacking tactics. Now I use only this 4-1-2-2-1 tactical scheme setting counter attacks and more defensive mentality for Away matches.

Glad to hear about your good start Vitaley. You could be correct about the need for a new striker as Niculae isn't getting any younger (-;
Ye, I decided to think seriously about new dangerous (more dangerous than Niculae) forward after the fourth season in Premier League. It will be necessary especially if my Southampton enters UEFA cup.
I notice you have facepacks, can you please help me, i have winrar and have downloaded the facepacks but am unsure how to proceed. help?
You are so making me be warped back to Southampton. Could you give some tips on managing them? Currently I manage Chelsea (Favourite Team) but Southampton is second best. Thanks
Anonymous,
Sometimes it is enough to unpack facepacks to "Football Manager 2008\user data\graphics\" folder.
But there is official list of steps that I would advise you to perform:
1. Extract the zip/rar file into;
My Documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2008/Graphics/Pictures/Players
2. You may need create the above folders, if they do not exist.
3. Load up FM, go to Options > Preferences > Display and Sound
4. Untick ''Use skin cache'' box
5. Tick ''Always reload on confirm''
6. Then click ''Confirm''
7. Then finally restart FM.
zulcott,
I don't know how to help you actually. Because it's too common question.
The common advice - make decision what tactics you will use and sign players for this tactics.
