In the previous post I described my new rather fluent tactical approach that helps to gain success in Premier League if you manage weak club (like Southampton, Wigan, Derby, etc.). The main part of this approach is usage of defensive 4-1-4-1 tactics. You can download it from here:

And now some description of this tactics. Its formation looks in the following way:

my defensive 4-1-4-1 tactics for Football Manager 2008

Team instructions

Individual instructions

They are the same as in 4-3-3 tactics. Actually this 4-1-4-1 tactics is created from this attacking 4-3-3.

I just moved MLC and MRC from 4-3-3 tactics into positions of clear attacking wingers: ML and MR. And my 2 forwards (FLC, FRC) were moved  into MLC and MRC positions.

Some tips and hints during match

- if your opponent plays more aggressive, has more possession of the ball, set Closing Down to maximal value;

- if your opponent is very strong and you play away, turn on Counter Attack

- For away game Mentality can be set more Defensive.

- For home match you can increase Tempo and  Mentality. It often gives good result.

- If you need more possession, set the slowest Tempo and Passing Style maximally Short.

I have been reading your blog Vitaly for a couple of months now (but have not posted) and I really enjoy it. I have been struggling away from home and downloaded your tactic to use as my away tactic. It's brilliant. Keep up the good work.

    hey..this dzex again..

plz tell me the suitable ability for all position in this formation??

example..: both wingers must have what ability to look invincible to opponent while attacking?

does the striker must have to use fast or target striker?

what about AMC? have to put dribbler Midfielder or what?

who must feed the ball more to the striker?? the AMCs?? or the wingers??

sorry if i'm make this complicated to u..i just wanna know..

    i'll support u man!!

  4. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

Wingers must be fast with good dribbling, crossing and passing.

Striker can be used of both types. If you play away using counter attacks then prefer fast forward. For home games target striker can be better.

Central midfielder should possess high passing and creativity.

    Miro,
I'm really glad to hear that my tactics is helpful for you managing man city. With Saints I'm also happy about that. The next post in this blog will be about season ending and the final position of Southampton in Premier League standing

  9. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

    Dzex,
of course, it is very hard to gain victory or even draw when you manage lets say Colchester and play against Chelsea. In this case you should try to experiment with team and player instructions...
But, for sure, class of Chelsea players can solve the game anyway.

  13. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

I think and hope that Arsenal will win either Premier League or Champions League. They just need few star players for positions:
    DC, DMC and maybe FC.

For DMC I would like to see ether Anatoliy Timoshchuk from Zenit or Gennaro Gattuso from Milan

  16. Sonik Says:

I wonder how come Zonal marking works with tight marking??

  17. Vitaliy Mokosiy Says:

Tight marking is useful independently of Zonal or Marking style. If forward struggles with your defender for a ball then Tight Marking makes affects defender to be "more tight".

Also consider set pieces when players mark one another always
