At the bottom of Premier League. Lady Luck is against us

Hi everyone! Today I'm going to continue my Southampton story telling you about the awaited start in Premier League. After making several transfers, we played the first 12 matches plus 3 games in English League Cup. And unfortunately we cannot boast with our results. Just look at them:

Poor results of my Southampton

The first matches were hopeful. I was thinking in that way after victories over Newcastle and Nottingham Forest (in penalty series). But then we had row of rather bright losses. The common scenario of the most of those matches was:

- One of my forwards scores and we lead in a game (1:0)

- Opponents scores (1:1)

- Opponents scores (1:2)

.... and so on... and score against us in the end.

That's why many Premier League teams had strong-willed victory against my Southampton. Especially, Liverpool - they were loosing 1:4 in second half. And I was thinking that victory is in my pocket completely! But suddenly guys from Mercyside managed to score 4 times and win the game - 5:4! As a result we got out of League Cup...

The resulting standing in the League looks more depressive than our participation in League Cup:

The forwards score enough goals (especially Marius Niculae), but midfield and defence allow opponent teams creating many dangerous moments and making our fine goalkeeper Rune Almenning Jarstein work very hard!

They say we have some kind of defence concern:

And probably I would agree... We'll see.

Try switching into defensive tactics? Promoted clubs in their first season usually conceed a lot of goals unless you play that defensive style, then leave your front three to strut their stuff on the counter attack. Both home and away.

I can see you score a lot, and I mean a lot for a club that's bottom of the table. Your tactics are unbalanced perhaps which is too offensive minded, and yet your back four can't cope with opponent's attack.

I'm with janus on this one.

Btw: nice blog! I keep coming back to it. :)

I dont understand your problem, i played a game as southampton and we finished 14th in our first season in the premiership, I think your problem is that you are playing very aggressively with a 4-3-3, I find playing with various shapes that are essentially a 4-5-1 work best, ie 4 defenders, 2 defensive midfielders, 2 wingers, an attacking midfielder and a striker. and dont underestimate the value of signing older more experienced defenders, i signed luigi di biagio as southampton and he was really strong.
    but yea, good luck

You need a DM. In my experience, a holding midfielder is crucial to any defence - it allows the other midfielders to confidently move forward whilst keeping the back line protected.

I am inclined to Agree with Amarillo Mike, i am currently in the Premier League with a very rich Liverpool side with pretty much a Top World Class team and even with Alot of the top players the game has to offer, i conceed tonnes of goals unless there is a Defensive Midfielder to Break up the Opponents Attacking Play.

As annoying as it can be to have to play an anchor man, play him behind two central midfielders and 2 high AM wingers and you will pretty much control & Dominate the Midfield.

    youloong,
I would advice take control over some clubs that are relegation candidates: Derby, Wigan, Sunderland...
This is really tough challenge and you will get a lot of experience as a result

    janus995-cheeps, robert,

yes, I'm thinking on using more defensive tactics... But for while it's interesting what results I will recieve playing this attacking one in January.

I think I will have enough time to get out of relegation group of teams when half of season is ahead

    amarillo mike, anonymous,
Ye, probably I will use DM in the second half of the season. Thanks!

I am the manager of Shrewsbury Town and im in the 20023/24 season and we are have been in the premier league for 5 seasons and not been relegated. Also we are in the champions league and finished 4th last year. I think that you need to change into a 4 4 2 formation. Also try and get some players in on free transfers at the end of each season
